Overnight figures show the Doctor Who Christmas special beaten 13.8 million to Eastenders' 13.9. This may change as more reliable ratings are tabulated. The long running soap has been Doctor Who's rival since the mid-eighties, and is probably responsible for the 1985 gap, the 1989 cancellation and lots of other bad things too.
