Reuters reports that Star Trek XI will be directed by Lost creator JJ Abrams.
The project replaces Rick Berman's proposed Romulan war trilogy and is described as a "Star Fleet Academy" story featuring young Kirk and Spock, which has been around as a concept since pre-production on Star Trek VI in 1990. The new film is expected in 2008.
