Do you really want to know about MY private life and the creatures that inhabit it? Hell, I give me nightmares the last thing I want to do is pass them on to the unsuspecting public and infect the masses. |

Are we talking personal experiences ? I have had two. The first is easily explained, the second is not; but then again is not very exciting. The first; Many years ago my Parents` used to manage a Pub. I`d gone to bed and, just as I had fallen asleep, they had locked up the premises. My Dad always put the takings in the ofice before turning in. It must have been as I was on the edge of sleep and wakefulness that he was doing this because I had some almost hallucinatory/auditory experience of keys jangling all around me. Then I had the sensation that there was a bat (probably vampire!!!!) flapping its` wings above my neck (I was lay face down) followed by a sensaton that is almost identical to dragging a stick along corrugated iron. This dragged up and down the length of the bed. The final experience was that there was a huge dog (somehow it seemed to be a Saint Bernard) panting as if out of breath on the back of my neck. Throughout,I was paralysed! Unable to move. Unable to speak. Eventually (a second or 500?) I managed to ever so quietly voice,"Mum" (17 years old and still calling for mommy). As soon as I achieved even the tiniest vocalisation the whole experience ended. Nothing para-normal, more para-psychotic. I realise this is not what you are asking about,.. but then questions of this nature lead us to places we never expected. There is another strange experience but that can wait!!! |

Obviously you can`t wait to hear about the second experience, so here goes. About two or three in the morning I had just dropped my customers off (I`m a Taxi driver). I drove about twenty yards up the road and parked up to count my nights takings to see if I could afford to finish early. As I start counting I become aware of a cat sat on the kerb about ten or fifteen feet adjacent to me.About three or four feet either side of the cat are two birds. The cat looked bored while the two birds seemed to be wittering away at the cat. They then all looked in my direction and the birds fell silent. I sat there for a couple of minutes to see what would happen next but, nothing. They continued staring until I drove off. Not Earth shattering I know but it was really weird. I`ve heard of cats forming a circle with a cat in the middle and making a right racket in the middle of the night. Any one heard of things similar to this or can offer any explanations? (Apart from the obvious; alcohol/drugs/mental incapacity etc.) |

Just trying to enter into what I thought was the spirit of things. Never mind. Perhaps none of the members have had strange experiences or perhaps they are too afraid to say anything for fear of having their drinking habits questioned. |

Hey Terry,
Your experience with the panting dog and flying bat is actually explainable if not experiencable (if that is a word).
It's called 'Old Hag syndrome' and is experienced by people all around the world, but differently.
Originally used as a sign that your life was invaded by witches, and then more recently by aliens or angels.
It's actually a common biological reaction during sleep. The brain switches off the limbs, and other unnecessary parts, during sleep in order to stop the body from running around the place and damaging itself.
However, sometimes you wake up enough to be conscious of your surroundings, but your limbs are still 'off'. Essentially, it feels like something is sitting on your chest (or back if you are sleeping on your stomach) and that your limbs are pinned down. You can't shout for help though sometimes you can manage a small whimper.
Due to the fact you are technically still in a 'semi-sleep' state, your mind begins to hallucinate, noises become enhanced, your own breathing sounds like something else or someone elses, common household settling noises become the invader shifting around and the tingling sensation of something scraping down your neck and back is just your body reinstating control of the limbs.
You then 'croak' a few words and the 'spell' or moment is broken and your 'wake up' for real and your imagination makes up a story to attribute to what it just experienced. |

As for the cat and birds - I got nothing.
But I have noticed my cat and the suburbian pidgeons doing a similar routine late on a very hot afternoon. |

Thanks Tareth. I have always believed that was the explanation (though I couldn`t have analysed it as you did) and furthermore I appreciate it being taken seriously. I`ve read/heard of similar instances of such things which I believe are labelled something about an incubus or succubus (there you go jestear;plenty of material for you to play with) which were also once ascribed to daemons or witchcraft. There are probably Millions of people who have experienced something like this. Jestear; I would be really disappointed if you didn`t capitalise on the above,..... |
