Just watched that classic 1980 version of Flash Gordon last night.



What a great film, so funny.



Sam Jones made a good Flash I reckon. Pity they never made a sequel to it.

I can still remeber going to see "Flash gordon" with my Dad when I was about 6. I loved it!!!!! And the music!!! It rocked!!!!!

Queen were at their height about then. And I remember engineers telling me back in the early 1990s that the song "Flash" is one of the best tracks to use for testing the full range of amplifiers and speakers because of it's wide use of both low and high frequencies. I'm no tech., but that sounded good. And I love that song, and all the sampling they use (voive overs and sound effects from the film mixed with Queen's atmospheric music)



Now I feel like watching that film again. I think it's been 20 years since I last watched it.

Yes I watched it on a mate's HD TV, absolutely fantastic.



Max Von Sydow was a great Ming.



I remember watching the 1930s version that Ch 7 used to show early in the mornings during the 80s.



They usually showed it after another classic series - The Tomorrow People.

Max Von Sydow was a very talented actor. His role in "The Exorcist" was superb!

I've just finished a piece on research on the first 20 years of Doctor Who screenings across Austrlaia. While I remember the Flash Gordon serial, it wasn't screend alongside The Tomorrow People. Which was treated abominably by Seven.

Although I do remember seeing both shows on at the morning on Ch 7 at one stage, but obviously not at the same time.



Ch 7 usually treats most fantasy stuff with contempt sadly.



Even Trekkies arent' imune from the commercial stations silly programming either....

Regarding the Doctor Who equivelant of Seven's treatment of The Tomorrow People; it'd be like them playing thouggh the first two Doctors, fine, then playing some fourth, repeating the first two in reverse order, then some third and fourth, then the first two in reverse again, then some fifth, first two, then randomly though first five, then the whole lot--in reverse order!

Sounds like typical commercial tv to me!!



I do remember that The Tomorrow People was shown quite a bit though.  I think I must have seen the first series about 5 times!



It's great to have them on dvd finally.  Now everyone can play them in their correct order.



It's a pity that the 1992 revival didn't have any of the original cast in it.



Hopefully they'll do a new series one day with some of the older cast. There are plenty more stories to be told with that group.

There's a series of audio adventures, if you're into that sort of thing. I understand Phillip Gilbert was considered for the '90s series, but dropped when they decided the new computer hummed rather than spoke.

I'm not really into the audio adventures much.



I prefer to see the action than hear it.



Although I do understand that they are quite good.

I've never listened to any of the TP audios, ironic really as I was the one who broke the news to the online TP community.



And when I write "ironic" I mean "spoiling"

I'm not sure which one was my fave TP cast member.



I thought the one who played Steven was ok, although he claims that he was sacked from the show because he couldnt act!



Nicholas Young made a good leader - at least the producers had the foresight to keep him on until the end.

I'm in the "good Stephen, evil Mike" camp myself. Although also like Carol. The wetter they were the more it worked.

You think? 



I didn't like Carol at all.  Very annoying, and didn't really add anything to the show.



John, Steven & Elizabeth were the best ones.  They made TP a more 'adult' kids show....much in the style of the Pertwee/Baker stories of the time.

They came in three stripes. The child actors who couldn't act, the young leads and the more grown up ones. And the sap friends. The more vulnerable they seemed the more dramatic the show was. When Mike got punched out by the evil foreign agent in Secret Weapon I assume that being a rough and ready cockney he's used to this sort of treatment. When something similar happens to Stephen in The Doomsday Men I think "That must have hurt, I wonder if he's broken?"

I can see your point.



But I liked TP best when it concentrated on the more 'adult' concepts of the stories, rather than doing more self exposition thru the weaker characters.



I remember the Mike character being ok - although I haven't reached my dvd collection that far yet to comment further......
