John Woodnutt - Regular supporting actor of the classic series has passed away |
more from same (Science Fiction) |
John Woodnutt, versatile character actor who has played a wide range of roles from a great variety of genres, has recently passed away. Unfortunately, Doctor Who Magazine (Issue 366, 11th March 2006) does not provide the date of his death, but promises a full obituary in Issue 367.
However, a search on the Internet (www.imdb.com/name/nm0940407/filmogenre) provides a staggering array of information - it seems John's career is long and varied, including roles in the very under rated British sci fi film "Life Force" (the one with the space vampires), and parts in a large variety of British television shows including a 1985 episode of "The Bill", "Callan" in 1969, "The Sweeney"in 1975, "The Avengers" in 1966 and "Billy Bunter" in 1953.
We who love Dr Who will fondly remember John Wooodnutt as one of the few regular supporting cast who did not over act, and added effectively to the ambience of the story. His most notable role will always be the Duke of Forgill/Broton, which he played with a 'low key' wit and menace that helped make "Terror of the Zygons" the atmospheric and eerie conclusion to Tom Baker's first season as the Doctor.
His other roles in Doctor Who include: "spearhead fromSpace" (as Hibbert), "Frontier in space" (playing the Draconian Emperor), and "The Keeper of Traken" (in which he played Seron.

Without the most popular television monster (not just in this show but regularly cited as such in polls) available, the 13 episode season will have to be even more interesting to capture an audience.

The Adelaide Sunday Mail still managed to jump the wrong way at the eleventh hour (possibly by following Associated Newspapers' Daily Mail), and claim Bill Nighy had been chosen.

New BBC Doctor Who TV series set for 2004-05! |
more from same (Science Fiction) |
Doctor Who will be back, not just as an animated webcast,
but as a TV series! |
Yes! It's official! And
so it begins... again! Breaking news today, originally from London's Daily
Telegraph, and now from the BBC themsleves.. To be written by Russell T.
Davies - (creator and writer of Queer as Folk and author of Virgin's
Doctor Who New Adventure Bad Therapy novel), the sereis, most
probably in a limited 6x 50 minute episode season, should make a return early
in 2005. We will have more details as they come. As for casting, it is too early
in the process apparently to release these details, but it would seem silly
to cast anyone other than Richard E. Grant, who is BBCi's Ninth Doctor in thier
November animated webcast Scream of the Shalka!

Time for second vote on "SFSA" [forum post gone astray] |
more from same (Science Fiction) |
The South Australian Doctor Who Fan Club inc. has been popularly known as
"SFSA" for two and a half years.
At the time of this name change, a commitment to a second vote on this was
undertaken.
I will be moving at the forthcoming AGM (June 21) "That we ratify the
agreement to use SFSA to refer to the SADWFC inc.".
A failure of this vote will see us revert to SADWFC inc., success will see
us continue to be popularly known as "SFSA", with all official recognition
being as SADWFC inc.

I'm sorry for this but it has come to my attention that DareDevil is also showing at Piccadilly Cinema and has a discount price of $8.50 for adult and $6.50 for concession on presentation of relevant concession card. I have decided (in consultation with our President) that Picadilly would be kinder to our purses and have easier parking.
The screening is now at Piccadilly at 7.20pm, please present youself in the cinema foyer at 6.50pm so we may take advantage of the 10 or more group discount. End transmission.

New Who-spinoff comic - Miranda - out January! |
more from same (Science Fiction) |
From the authorial pen of acclaimed Who-novelist and author Lance Parkin, and from the artistic pen of 2000AD and numerous other project, artist Allan Bednar comes "MIRANDA" a new 6-part comic from new UK publishing house "Comeuppance Comics". Out in January, with the cover art online at "http://www.comeuppancecomics.co.uk" (pretty impressive, have a look!) "MIRANDA" features the Doctor's "daughter" from Parkin's BBC EDA novel "FATHER TIME". MIRANDA is from a bloodline of Empire and Universe Spanning rulers, and has been hunted down by her own people, the KLADE.
Complimenting the forthcoming FACTION PARADOX comics and novel series from "Mad Norwegian Press", and audio series from BBV, it would appear that with the reduction of BBC official novels and product, the "unofficial/tie-in/spin-off etc" ranges are flourishing! Availablility and cost in Australia are tba.

Big Finish, producers of the on-going audio play series of Doctor Who have just announced the guest line-up for this December's special comdedy release "Bang-Bang-a-Boom!", by Clayton Hickman and Gareth Roberts.
Of interese to people here (and on Goodies Rule OK! I'm sure) is this, from the Big Finish Press Release:
Absent-minded Professor Ivor Fassbinder is to be played by none other than Graeme Garden, known and loved by millions as a member of the classic comedy trio "The Goodies". In recent years Graeme has appeared in "The Student Prince" and "Peak Practice", written numerous comedy shows including the TV series "Surgical Spirit", and he continues to delight Radio Four listeners with his regular appearances on the anarchic game show "I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue".
