Subject: Battlestar Galatica: Old vs New series

This isn't Dr Who, but one of the many sci fi shows that I love is Battlestar Galatica.
The orginal series was a classic, with great special effects for its time.
I'm also a fan of the new version as well, as I think they've built upon what's already been done and taken well known characters into different interesting paths.
I realize that there are those who hate the new series, but I can appreciate both versions.
Anyone agree? |

We watched a heap of old Galactica last year, and recently the Buck Rogers movie. If we keep up the Glen A Larson theme eventually we;ll get to Knight Rider...
I havn't heard anyone in the club say a bad word about the new Galactica. |

Well, I have heard some people diss the new version.
But as I said, Ive kept an open mind about it, and I think both versions work as well as each other.
Buck Rogers is great! The first season was so kitch, loved it!
But it definately went downhill in the 2nd season - they got rid of the camp and made it more serious - big mistake. |

Hey Axelf,
I LOVE the new Battlestar Galactica. It is dark, and intriguing. The characters engage the viewer on many levels. It raises so many moral (and for Jimmy, philisophical) questions, the cliffhangers are robust and I can't wait until Season 3.
It is really the Sci-Fi of the 21st Century. It gets my mark for the 2nd best Sci-Fi ever
Doctor Who is the best, both the original and new series are fantastic.... however, I always found the original Battlestar slow and predictable with 2 dimensional characters |

The only people I've seen pay out new Galactica (online) are comparing it critically to the old series, and claim to be offended by the gender change for Boomer. That sort of thing.
And Dirk Benedict wrote a piece in Dreamwatch on how bad it is that Starbuck is female now, but we can forgive him.
The only thing I don't like about it is the CGI Cylons, but that's on principle. |

Well I do agree that the character development is much better in the new series than the old one.
Having said that, I admired the scope of the original. Some of the episodes were fantastic, such as War of the Gods. Those types of episodes showed that the series had potential to creat a fascinating universe.
One query: I know that the first 3 episodes were put together and released into cinemas overseas. Was it ever released theatrically here?

I believe so, but I didn't go to see it. I remember it was put together specifically for Canada, where it hadn't screened on TV. |

ok, interesting.
The dvd box set of it has the first 3 eps as one long film.
In a way, I'm a bit disappointed in that. I would have liked to have seen those 3 episodes separately, as they were meant to be seen.
It's great to see Richard Hatch in the new series. I love the way you are never sure of his characters motives. At least the new series bought back one actor from the original show. |

[checks imdb.com] OK, the one we saw at the club must have been the thatrical version, because Baltar gets beheaded mid way through. |

The guy playing Baltar in the old series was great. Very menacing.
His last role was in a trailer for a proposed revival of the series, funded by Richard Hatch.
Would love to see that one time, be interesting. |
